出羽五ヶ寺の一。山形市内随一の大伽藍。
山形城第11代城主であった最上義光公が、愛娘、駒姫の菩提寺として、現在地に移建した寺である。
本堂は、市指定有形文化財、鐘楼は、県指定有形文化財、境内にある大イチョウは、天然記念物となっている。

寺は、山形県山形市中央区にある。建立は1294年。

寺とは、皇帝の住む場所であることから、寺院の名が付けられた。

寺内は、足利家の石渡家の宮殿として開かれたもので、山形県稲毛寺と同じく石渡家が建てたものである。広場は、山形県稲毛寺の方が広く、寺院の壁も石渡家のものである。

The temple is located in the central part of the town of Yamagata, Yamagata prefecture. The temple was built in 1294, and got its name from the fact that it was the residence of the emperor.

The temple has been open to the public since it was the residence of the Yamagata clan lord. The grounds of the temple are larger than those of the Yamagata clan lord’s temple, and the walls of the temple are those of the Yamagata clan lord.
