Kurokabe Square

Shiga Prefecture

The intersection where Otemon Street (Mino-Tanigumi-Kaido Road ) extending from Nagahama Castle to the east and Kitaguni-Kaido Road cross is called "Fuda-no-tsuji." This is because the Kousatsu board (Kousatsu was a board set up by the government to inform rules, regulations and laws to the common people) was set up here during the Edo period. This intersection was a center of Nagahama. In 1990, a Nagahama branch of Daihyaku Sanju Bank was built in this intersection - because the wall was black, the bank started to be commonly called "Kurokabe Bank" (black-wall-bank). This imposing building made in the mixture of Japanese and Western styles underwent various changes and in 1989, it was opened as "Korokabe Glass Hall." The building has a modern exterior, with white window frames against black mortar walls. The building is surrounded by a short iron fence. The building has an entrance hall with a well hole. Jewelry made of glass and daily tools are sold on the 1st floor and glass works collected from around the world are displayed and sold on the 2nd floor.
