Miho Museum

Shiga Prefecture Koga Area

This museum was designed by I.M. Pei, a famous architect who is known for pyramid made of glass in the Louvre. The museum owns the ground of 300,000 tsubo (about 99000 square meters) in size and this has a promenade lined with cherry trees. The museum consists of two buildings: the South Hall, which displays ancient art works from the Orient in the theme of Silk Road, and the North Hall, which displays traditional Japanese art works such as works related to sadou, picture scrolls, and lacquerware. 80% of the building is buried underground in order to harmonize the museum with the natural surrounding of the area. The architecture, which is set harmoniously with nature, is also a must-see.
