Konan Sanzen Temple

Shiga Prefecture Koga Area

This temple, which belongs to the Tendai sect, is located in Mt. Iwane, about 2.6km north-west from JR Mikumo station. Saicho came to this mountain at the beginning of the Heian period and founded a second temple buildings of Enryaku-ji temple. The temple was named Konan Sanzen after Emperor Kanmu recovered from illness here when Saicho presented him water imbued with spiritual powers. The solemn, palace-like main hall of the temple is designated as a national treasure. Inside the hall, 15 statues are enshrined, including the sitting statue of Yakushi Nyokai made of wood, which is the object of worship.
