Hieizan (Mt. Hiei) Enryaku-ji Temple

Shiga Prefecture Otsu ・ Shiga Area

Hieizen Enryaku-ji temple is the headquarter of the Tendai sect, which has a large precinct on Mt. Hiei and is registered as a World Heritage site. At the end of the Nara period, 19 year-old Saicho (767-822) climbed Mt. Hiei and built a small hut, which is the origin of this temple. For over 1,200 years, the temple held top status in the religious world of Japan and had produced many great priests who had supported Buddhism. It is said that the temple's propery included three temple towers, sixteen valleys, and three thousand residences for priests at the end of Heian period. Visitors can climb up to the top of the mountain relatively easily by car or can travel by cable-car or a bus.
