Ancient tombs of Matsuoka

Fukui Prefecture Fukui Sakai Area

The ancient tombs of Matsuoka consist of about 50 tombs from 3 BC to the 7th century AD. They are located on Matsuoka hill in Eiheiji town. The mixture of square, round, or keyhole-shaped tumuli are scattered about. These include five keyhole-shaped tumuli of more than 50m, such as Tegurigajoyama ancient tomb. The people who were buried in these large-sized ancient tombs were all placed in a boat-shaped stone coffin made of shakudani stone, which can only be found in Echizen area. The fact that there are many large-sized ancient tombs made of shakudani stone is a special characteristic of the ancient tombs of Matsuoka.
