Myogen-in (Temple and Eye Hospital)

Myogen-in belongs to the Tendai sect and is well-known as the oldest and largest eye hospital. The Majima-school of Opthalmology was founded by Seigen Souzu, and is a monumental achievement in the history of Japan’s ophthalmology. Many men of literature such as Kobori Enshu and Maruyama Oukyo stayed there. There are 8 works in the temple that are designated as prefectural cultural properties.
