Kunouzan Toshogu Shrine

Shizuoka Prefecture Shizuoka Area

This is where Tokugawa Ieyasu, who succeeded in ruling the whole nation of Japan and was the first Shogun of Edo Shogunate, is enshrined. Shrine building on top of the Mt. Kunou is made in gongen-zukuri style in which the prayer hall and the main hall are linked with a stone room. Both the interior and exterior of the building is decorated with detailed sculptures and vivid colors. The shrine was built by the 2nd Shogun Hidetada, following Ieyasu’s will. This shrine is said to be the precursor of the Nikko Toshogu Shrine and most buildings in the precinct are designated as national important cultural properties.
