Mishima Taisha Shrine

Shizuoka Prefecture Izu Area

Mishima Taisha Shrine is said to be the grandest shrine in Izu, because it enshrines Oyamazumi-no-mikoto and Kotoshironushi-no-mikoto. The shrine received strong support from the Asano Family. It is also famous for a story that Minamoto-no-Yorimoto visited here for 100 days and rose up in arms to reestablish the Genji clan. There is a rock-chair where Yoritomo sat in the precinct. The shrine buildings were built in 1866 and are all made of Japanese hinoki trees with gorgeous engravings around the eaves. Also in the precinct is a treasury displaying shrine treasures, an old fragrant olive tree designated as a national natural monument, and some monuments engraved with haiku poems by Matsuo Basho and Wakayama Bokusui.
