Shimoda Park (Shiroyama Park)
Shizuoka Prefecture Izu Area
This nature park lies amidst Uto castle ruins and occupies a cape that faces Shimoda port. Visitors will find a walking path lined with old pine trees, cherry trees, camellias, azaleas and hydrangeas. There are about 150,000 hydrangeas in the park and the Hydrangea Festival is held in each June. There is also a monument commemorating the opening of Japan which is engraved with a relief of Perry and Harris and another monument commemorating Renjo Shimooka, who was a pioneer of photography technology in Japan. From an observatory, a full view of Shimoda port and the Suzaki Peninsula can be enjoyed.
