Kumano Old Road Iseji was registered as a World Heritage site in July 2004 as the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range." The road was used as a pilgrimage route for people going to the Kumano Sanzan of Kumano Hongu Shrine, Hayatama Taisha Shrine and Nachi Taisha Shirnes. The stone pavement road covered with moss connecting the two sacred sites of Ise and Kumano still exists today.
