Toba Sea-Folk Museum

Mie Prefecture Iseshima Area

This is a unique museum which introduces the long and deep history on the relationship between humans and the ocean. The exhibition room, which received various awards including the one from Japan Architecture Society, blends in with the hill overlooking Ogitsuura and the natural features of Shima area. There are three exhibitions halls (only one of them is open to public), a pond arranged with art works, and a small ancient tomb park overlooking the ocean. The collections of more than 40,000 objects centering on folk references relating to the ocean, such as tools used for fishing boats, women divers, and seaweed manufacturing.

25 mins by bus bound for Ijika from JR or Kintetsu Toba station; get off at Umi-no- Hakubutsukan-mae and walk 7 mins.
