Nawashiro Cherry Blossoms

Gifu Prefecture Hida・Takayama・Gero Area

In a 20 minutes drive southward from Gero hot springs, there are two cherry trees standing closely together. These cherry trees are called "Nawashiro-zaruka." The trees were named after the flowering, which comes regularly every year. People started to prepare Nawashiro (to prepare for rice seedlings) after enjoying the beautiful flowers. The trees are the Yoshinozakura cherry tree species, and they are probably about 400 years old.
